International Joint Science, Learning and Policy Opportunity
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a key part of the global ocean circulation, that moves heat around the Earth. It is important to Europe because a weakening or collapse of the AMOC could cause significant decreases in temperature and other substantial climate changes in the region, particularly in northern European countries. For Canada, a weakened AMOC could contribute to sea level rise along Canada’s Atlantic coastline and have a range of impacts on coastal communities and the blue economy. The AMOC is a priority of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance (AAORIA) and one of the key research areas in its Ocean Observation and Modeling Work Plan.
In response to this major concern, MEOPAR is collaborating with JPI Oceans on a Rapid Response Action by initiating and coordinating a project to produce an authoritative scientific review report. This report aims to synthesize different scientific narratives into a clearer picture for policymakers and provide a meaningful assessment that leads to actionable policy recommendations. The report draft chapters will include; 1) An overview, 2) State of the AMOC and has the AMOC weakened? 3) Future AMOC weakening, 4) Are we approaching a tipping point? 5) Impacts and risks, 6) The human dimension, responses and solutions.
For this 2nd round, we are looking specifically for expert subject matter for the chapter 6 – Human dimension, responses and solutions: Socio-economic impacts and consequences for adaptation and mitigation policies and goals. Policy recommendations, precautionary implementations and governance
Expressions of Interest
MEOPAR is soliciting expressions of interest from Canadian subject matter experts on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation – specifically for the chapters 6- Human dimension, responses and solutions. We are seeking at least one subject matter experts that will form part of a Canadian writing team over a 12-month period. The team will collaborate with European Subject Matter Experts to produce an authoritative scientific review report. Selected individuals will be provided with a $2500 CAD stipend for their academic and expert contributions to this project. The team will also be supported by a full-time Canadian based Research Associate and a European based research secretariat. The project will also include multiple writing workshops in both Canada and the EU.

To express your interest in being on the writing team (chapter 6) please send a detailed cover letter to isabelle.tremblay@meopar.ca outlining your knowledge of the AMOC, and your full Academic CV. In your CV, please clearly identify any publications or projects that specifically connect with the AMOC – chapter 6. Also make the connections in your cover letter and CV with the chapter 6 of the report.
We would also want to know if you have availability and desire to contribute as:
a) a chapter co-lead author (and implicitly serve on the Scientific SteeringCommittee)
b) a contributing author
c) an external reviewer at an advanced draft stage
