Summary:
The FBRSN CoP aims to strengthen cross regional Inuit-led stewardship of Foxe Basin’s land and marine ecosystems through sustained collaboration between Inuit communities, Indigenous Guardians, academic researchers, and key regional partners.
Goal and Approach:
The FBRSN CoP goal is to ensure that environmental decision-making in this ecologically and culturally vital Arctic region is both scientifically robust and grounded in Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ), safeguarding the long-term health of this Arctic ecosystem and the communities that depend on it. By integrating community-based monitoring with scientific research, the FBRSN co-develops research priorities, shares ecological observations and data, and mobilizes knowledge to support local priorities. It also enhances local capacity for climate change adaptation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable resource management and development. Ultimately, the CoP seeks to empower Inuit leadership in environmental governance and create meaningful training and mentorship opportunities for youth and early-career researchers. In doing so, the network will enhance community resilience, preserve cultural continuity, and inform policy at regional and national levels, serving as a model for inclusive, place-based governance in the rapidly changing Arctic.
