Summary:
The goal of this CoP is to strengthen regional collaboration, knowledge exchange, and capacity for the study, conservation, and restoration of eelgrass meadows on the St. Lawrence.
Goal and Approach:
This CoP focuses on the study, conservation, and restoration of eelgrass (Zostera marina) meadows—vital coastal habitats that support biodiversity, fisheries productivity, carbon sequestration, and shoreline protection—across the estuaries and nearshore waters of the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, including eastern New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia’s North Shore, and western Cape Breton. The CoP aims to establish a coordinated regional approach to eelgrass monitoring and restoration while supporting watershed groups in their local efforts. It strengthens local and regional capacity through shared protocols, data management, and technical training; generates and mobilizes knowledge to inform eelgrass conservation and protection policies; and fosters collaboration across watersheds to advance positive ecological, economic, and social outcomes for coastal communities. While the primary partners operate in the Southern Gulf region, the CoP contributes to national discussions on blue carbon, nature-based solutions, and coastal climate resilience, while sharing knowledge and adaptable protocols that can be applied in other regions.
