Celebrating World Ocean Day and Addressing Canada’s Marine Challenges

By June 8, 2023No Comments

MEOPAR is proud to launch the final video of our partnership with Ocean School on World Ocean Day (June 8). The video highlights MEOPAR’s coordinated Canadian approach to addressing marine challenges and the Network’s ability to connect and collaborate with the goal of enhancing Canada’s research capacity in a changing marine environment.

MEOPAR’s Scientific Director, Dr. Doug Wallace, as well as its new Associate Scientific Co-directors, Dr. Brent Else and Dr. Fanny Noisette discuss the community’s future needs and goals, how these can be met as well as MEOPAR’s history and accomplishments to date.

As the world’s climate changes, the impact on our ocean is growing. It is imperative that the ocean research community continue to improve collaboration across disciplines, geography, and industries as it strives to grow a sustainable Blue Economy. By funding leading-edge research, supporting the next generation of professionals, and eliminating barriers to collaboration, MEOPAR connects people across disciplines and sectors.  By providing support to the government, Indigenous and public organizations, and industry, the ocean research community can help guide adaptation, promote sustainable ocean usage, and advance the Blue Economy. Canada needs to mobilize existing knowledge and expertise, bridging the gap between research and industry, to develop effective, innovative solutions to ocean challenges. MEOPAR supports a coordinated approach to mobilization of national expertise, knowledge and infrastructure in support of Canada’s sustainable blue economy and national adaptation strategy, the development of a new, diverse generation of ocean researchers and professionals, and the closing of gaps in Canada’s ST&I landscape.

Building on its past successes, MEOPAR can continue to advance Canada’s scientific capacity to observe, predict and respond to marine environmental and technological changes, and enhance the resilience of ocean-connected communities and industries in the face of climate change.
