Overview of the Role
We are looking for a strategic leader to serve as the Director, Modular Ocean Research Infrastructure (MORI) who will play a pivotal role in ensuring MORI becomes a global competitive model for scalable and flexible ocean research. You will be responsible for coordinating and leading MORI operations, which includes the oversight of the deployment of advanced, modular, portable infrastructure for vessel-based ocean research across Canada and internationally. The Director, MORI will be required to develop, execute and manage a sustainable business plan, identify, develop and maintain effective partnerships and relations with a wide variety of stakeholders, and manage logistics and operational risks.
Your areas of responsibility will include, but are not limited to:
- Lead the start-up, design and management of MORI while ensuring alignment to strategic goals and stakeholder needs.
- Engage with and build strong relationships with the scientific community, government agencies, private sector and the public to provide awareness and promote MORI initiatives.
- Oversee the end-to-end logistics for the deployment and retrieval of modular infrastructure on vessels, including scheduling, transport, staging and maintenance.
- Ensure MORI operations adhere to occupational health and safety regulations, marine standards and risk management frameworks.
- Build and lead a team of multidisciplinary professionals to support MORI’s operations, growth and sustainability.
Ideal Candidate
- University degree in ocean sciences, engineering, business administration or a related field. (A related master’s degree would be considered an asset). A combination of equivalent professional experience and training may also be considered.
- Minimum 7 years of experience in a progressive management role, including logistics coordination, operational start-up and project management.
- Demonstrated success in multi-stakeholder engagement and relationship management.
- Proven leadership experience in building, leading, and managing high-performing teams, ideally in a program or project management context.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) with a collaborative mindset.
- Experience in occupational health and safety oversight, regulatory compliance and risk management, preferably in a marine environment.
- Familiarity or established relationships with organizations collecting ocean data in Canada would be considered an asset.
- Preference will be given to candidates who are bilingual (fluent in spoken and written French and English) and/or reside in Halifax area.
