HALIFAX, NS: The Marine Environmental Observation Prediction & Response Network (MEOPAR) and Discovery Centre have partnered on an innovative new program, Discover Our Climate, to make a tangible impact on climate change literacy in communities and schools.

As climate change continues to have a profound impact on our planet, MEOPAR is proactively working to raise awareness of these impacts, how communities can adapt, and how to increase resilience to its far-reaching effects. Discovery Centre is committed to not only advancing environmental education but to inspiring the kinds of actions that will help to create a culture of environmental responsibility.

Together, MEOPAR and Discovery Centre developed the Discover Our Climate program, which takes MEOPAR’s peer-reviewed climate research and creates free tangible education resources and actions for classrooms, informal educational institutions, and the public.

“We know it’s vital to continue to grow climate and ocean literacy skills across the country, throughout students’ learning journeys. Discover Our Climate takes world class research, including research by members of the MEOPAR Network, and brings it into the classroom to inspire the next generation of ocean scientists and researchers. We are so pleased to contribute to the practical and relevant teaching tools created through this partnership.”
— Rodrigo Menafra, Managing Director, MEOPAR

Discover Our Climate consists of bilingual research features on eight climate topics, including ocean acidification, saltwater intrusion, coastal erosion, and plastic pollution, to name a few. The features enable teachers to integrate climate change research into their classroom through fun, engaging and accessible research topics. All Discover our Climate research features include curriculum-based learning activities designed for grades Primary to twelve to encourage youth to be curious and create solutions for the ongoing climate challenges.

“We are seeing youth becoming more and more conscientious of climate change and wanting to make a difference in the future of their planet. Discovery Centre is proud to use the foundation of science, paired with MEOPAR’s excellent research and resources, to make climate science and actions accessible, informative, and fun for our youth and communities.”
— Dov Bercovici, President & CEO, Discovery Centre

In the summer, Discovery Centre toured Nova Scotia Public Libraries to educate youth on climate science and daily actions they can take to make a difference for a more sustainable future, connecting with over 430 youth, coast to coast.

Discover Our Climate research features are available at visited libraries, free for the public while quantities last, and as downloadable resources on Discovery Centre’s website, www.thediscoverycentre.ca.

Discover Our Climate wouldn’t be possible without the financial support of the Trottier Family Foundation.
