Engagement Coordinator (CIOOS)

What You’ll Do

Reporting to the Director of CIOOS, the Engagement Coordinator will support CIOOS in its activities of national outreach, awareness, and collaboration. This one-year, full-time contract position plays a key role in enhancing visibility of CIOOS tools and services, growing user engagement, and supporting national work committees made up of leading experts from across the country. This position contributes to a larger, evolving system and may be considered for renewal subject to funding.

You’ll collaborate closely with internal CIOOS data specialists, regional associations, and external data partners to develop accessible content, highlight national initiatives, and promote the value of ocean data across sectors. This role will help ensure CIOOS communications and engagement efforts reflect national priorities, incorporate diverse knowledge systems, and support the uptake of open ocean data for research, decision-making, and public good.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement national communications strategies aligned with the upcoming CIOOS Strategic Plan (2026–2031).
  • Create educational materials and user-focused training resources (e.g. guides, slide decks, explainer content) for diverse audiences.
  • Lead development of campaign materials (e.g. for events, product launches, workshops) across platforms and formats.
  • Write content for newsletters, reports, social media campaigns and website updates; coordinate with Regional Associations to amplify stories and tools.
  • Coordinate with MEOPAR’s communications team on the planning, posting, and scheduling of content for newsletters, reports, social media campaigns, and website updates.
  • Ensure bilingual and inclusive language is used in all materials, in alignment with national accessibility and equity commitments.
  • Support event planning, outreach workshops, and national visibility campaigns.
  • Track engagement metrics and adjust tactics based on feedback and analytics.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in communications, public relations, marine science, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in science communication, outreach, or public engagement – preferably in environmental or data-driven fields.
  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts into accessible content.
  • Experience producing educational or training resources.
  • Familiarity with Canada’s ocean science, open science and/or scientific data management ecosystems.
  • Graphic and digital communication skills (e.g. Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools) are an asset.
  • Familiarity with both web analytics (e.g., Plausible.io) and marketing automation platforms (e.g., Mailchimp) will be considered an asset.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and collaboration skills to support a multidisciplinary project environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) with a collaborative mindset.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is preferred.

You will work virtually and generally maintain regular business hours, Monday to Friday, totaling 40 hours per week, including a one-hour daily lunch break.

Additional hours outside of normal working hours may be required from time to time. Some travel will be required.
