National Ocean Literacy Roundtable

Led by the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition (COLC)

In June, 2020, a multi-jurisdiction research team led by 4 postdocs and 1 graduate student, and supported by 5 academic supervisors, and the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition’s (COLC) National Advisory Council, held a National Ocean Literacy (OL) Round Table in Halifax (as part of the 2020 H20 Conference & Exhibition).

Providing regional and national opportunities for networking and collaboration across disciplines and sectors, the workshop increased post-docs and early career researchers’ communication, leadership, publishing, and project management skills. By working with industry leaders in consulting, education, and marine-based economies, the participants gained practical skills that can be applied for complex marine issues.

Aside from the roundtable, a 2-day working session was devoted to interdisciplinary publishing, high-impact publishing, and data and ethics management for multi-jurisdictional publications.

This round table was the final element of an 18-month research study taking the ‘pulse’ of OL in Canada, and brought together approximately 40 key stakeholders/rights holders to review and synthesize the regional research results, and start mapping out a national strategy based.
