MEOPAR National Forum on Coastal Community Resilience: Local Government Initiatives

February 22-23, 2022 | Virtual Event

From coast to coast to coast, Canada’s municipalities have begun to adapt to climate change.

Update December 17, 2021: Due to uncertainty about COVID-19 impacts on local gatherings, the 2022 National Forum has shifted to a fully virtual event.

You are invited to participate in MEOPAR’s second National Forum on Coastal Community Resilience. After the success we had in 2020 with over 100 participants at our virtual event (see the 2020 National Forum Report), MEOPAR is once again hosting a National Forum. In 2022, the event will be fully virtual, allowing professionals across the country to interact with representatives from coastal communities about initiatives and challenges for building community resilience in the face of diverse coastal hazards. It is also an opportunity to bring the attention of local issues to upper levels of government who can support local initiatives. The Forum is free to attend. Registration details will be available soon. We hope you will join us!

What is it about? Canada’s sea-facing communities are at risk from diverse coastal hazards such as flooding, earthquake, coastal erosion, changing sea ice conditions, and extreme weather events, many of which are exacerbated or caused by our changing climate.

This year, the National Forum will focus on local government initiatives and approaches to preparing for impacts emanating from the intersecting and often overlapping coastal hazards. The Forum is free to attend.

Who should attend? Representatives from First Nations, industry, government, academia and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

When is it? The Forum runs for two half days, with all sessions fully virtual. February 22, 9am-12 pm PT / 12pm-3pm ET / 1pm-4pm AT and February 23, 9am-12pm PT / 12pm-3pm ET / 1pm-4pm AT

How can I attend? The Forum sessions are completely virtual, and all participants are invited to participate online.

What language options will be available?  Simultaneous, live, French and English language interpretation will be available for the National Forum presentation sessions.

You are welcome to contact us at meoparnationalforum@meopar.ca if you have additional questions.

National Forum 2020

The first National Forum on Coastal Community Resilience took place on September 29 & 30, 2020.

The National Forum provided an opportunity for people living in communities on all of Canada’s coasts to engage with each other and to share approaches and ideas for adapting to sea-level rise and coastal flooding. Over two days of presentations and interactive discussions, participants had the opportunity to learn about and discuss initiatives and innovative climate actions for addressing sea-level rise, coastal flooding, and related coastal hazards.
