MEOPAR is pleased to be part of the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP) Final Summit as an event sponsor. Taking place in Montreal, Quebec, on August 29-September 1, 2022, the event will allow polar science experts from around the world to connect, share successes, and discuss YOPP’s legacy. The conference is open to those in academia, research institutes, government, corporate representatives as well as northern communities and end users. MEOPAR will present a plenary session and engage with attendees in the exhibit hall.

YOPP is an initiative of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to “enable a significant improvement in environmental prediction capabilities for the polar regions and beyond, by coordinating a period of intensive observing, modeling, verification, user-engagement and education activities.” Part of the 10-year Polar Prediction Project (2013-2022), YOPP’s core phases took place from May 2017 to June 2019.

Supporting Polar Prediction

In Cycle II, MEOPAR partnered with Polar Knowledge Canada and the Arctic Research Foundation for a Call for Research Proposals for the Year of Polar Prediction. The aim was to strengthen Canadian participation in the YOPP Project. The call supported the following projects:

As part of the YOPP Final Summit, posters based on MEOPAR-supported research will be displayed.

  • “Observations and Simulations of Aerosol and Fog Microphysical Parameters at Tuktoyaktuk, Canada During Summer 2018” from Rachel Chang (Dalhousie University)
  • “A likely mechanism for a “first-time” ice-free Arctic” from Alice Le Guern-Lepage (McGill University)
  • “Seasonal Predictability of the Minimum Sea Ice Extent in the Arctic Ocean in GCMs” from Sandrine Trotechaud (McGill University)

The second and third posters are connected with the FRAMS project. More information can be found here.
