Cycle II, exactEarth Project

Working in partnership with the whale watching industry, regulators and exactEarth, in British Columbia and the Strait of Gibraltar, this project will aim to (1) to increase the understanding of whale watching activities in general using AIS, and (2) to determine the feasibility of utilizing AIS data as a tool for informing whale watching operations as well as conservation policy and regulations in particular.

The research can empower individual vessel operators to collect data that are valuable to them and that could also contribute not only to the management of whale watching industry but also to marine conservation processes.
